National Landscape Conservation System
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS), which is an organized system of National Conservation Areas, National Historic Trails, National Monuments, Wild and Scenic Rivers, Wilderness Areas, and Wilderness Study Areas.
GSENM is the first national monument to be managed by the BLM and also the first area to be designated as part of the NLCS.
This unspoiled natural area remains a frontier, a quality that greatly enhances the Monument’s value for scientific study. The Monument has a long and dignified human history: it is a place where one can see how nature shapes human endeavors in the American West, where distance and aridity have pitted against our dreams and courage.
