Combined Arms Research Library

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service which helps CGSC students, faculty, and staff obtain materials that are unavailable in the Combined Arms Research Library.

How do I make a request?

  1. Check the CARL Online Catalog to see if CARL does not own the item.
  2. Submit your requests here. *Online requests require a valid CAC card.

If you do not possess a CAC card stop by the Reference Desk for an Interlibrary Loan request form or submit an online request through WorldCat for Books and other materials, excluding Journal Articles.

Any problems, special needs, etc. regarding ILL please call or stop by the ILL office which is located on the 1st floor of the library, and can be reached at (913) 758-3017, Mon-Fri, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The email address is usarmy.leavenworth.tradoc.mbx.cgsc-carl-acquisitions@mail.mil

Do I have to pay for ILL Services?

There is no charge for this service.

Is there a limit?

You may submit up to 15 ILL request per month. Please prioritize them in order of importance.

What can I request?

  • A maximum of five (5) articles from any one journal title (as per copyright restrictions)
  • Books
  • Dissertations and theses
  • Microforms
  • Photocopies of journal/newspaper articles
  • Non-print materials, such as videos, sound recordings, and computer files, can be requested but are often difficult to obtain

What can't I request?

We do not accept requests for items that are available from the CARL collections or in the CARL’s full-text e-journal collection.

How long does it take?

A request may take between 1 to 4 weeks, depending upon location and availability.

How can I check the status of my request?

You may check the status of your request at anytime by calling the ILL department at 758-3017.

What happens when my materials arrive at the Library?

You will be notified by e-mail when the item has been received.

How long will I have ILL material for?

It is up to the lending library as to when material is due. Material is generally loaned for 4 weeks. Some materials may be restricted to "library use only." Photocopies are yours to keep.

Can I renew my ILL material?

Renewals may be requested and are subject to approval by the lending library. If the label on your book states "NO RENEWALS," you cannot renew the item. You may request renewals by stopping by ILL office located on the 1st floor of the library or by phone at 758-3017, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The email address is usarmy.leavenworth.tradoc.mbx.cgsc-carl-acquisitions@mail.mil

Once I'm finished with the materials, where do I return them?

Please return all ILL material to a staff member at the circulation desk where you checked them out. Please do not put ILLs in a book return bin. Photocopies are yours to keep and don’t have to be returned.

I am not a CGSC student, faculty member, or staff, but need something from CARL’s collection. How do I request it?

Ask at your home library, which is any local public, corporate, or academic library where you have borrowing privileges.

What happens if an ILL becomes overdue?

Every effort should be made to return ILL materials on time. Overdue items jeopardize CARL’s ability to borrow items from other libraries. In addition, an individual's library privileges may be suspended until the overdue material is returned.
