The early September morning was well above freezing, an unexpectedly warm temperature for a dark, snow-filled setting at 11,333 feet in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland. After recovering from climbing one of the region’s three notable peaks, the Mönch, the day before, our party of four rose at o-dark-hundred to consume cereal, buttered rolls, orange juice and tea in our hut near the Jungfraujoch. We donned warm clothing, boots, crampons, head lights, safety harnesses and day packs containing food, tea and extra clothing to start off at 6 a.m. on our mission to climb the region’s highest peak, the Jungfrau.
