Livermore, California

Livermore, California administration building

For more than 50 years, the California campus of Sandia National Laboratories has delivered essential science and technology to resolve the nation's most challenging security issues. Many of these challenges — like energy resources, transportation, immigration, ports, and more — surfaced early in the state of California, providing Sandia/California with a special opportunity to participate in the first wave of solutions to important national problems.

For example, Sandia's scientists are breaking new ground in energy research and are helping to accelerate the development of next-generation biofuels so that we can reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil and mitigate the effects of global climate change.

Sandia opened our second main site in California's Livermore Valley in 1956. From a small group of employees, Sandia/California has grown to include some 900 staff and 250 contractors, postdoctoral fellows, and students and has broadened in scope to play a vital role in Sandia's overall missions.

Sandia/California is uniquely situated at the edge of the San Francisco Bay Area. Livermore enjoys close proximity to first-tier universities, Silicon Valley companies, and other top research laboratories and facilities. Livermore is just a short drive from the beach, the mountains, San Francisco, and the Napa Valley.
