Veterans, Tell Your Story
As a veteran, I know firsthand the difficulties of transitioning to civilian life. In the Air Force, I was trained to maintain some of the most technically advanced airframes and engines in the world; but when I entered the private sector, I was told I would have to go through three years of training before I could perform the same job as a civilian. Today, the men and women who have served us bravely overseas since 9/11 are experiencing the same difficulties I did, and it is time the federal government reformed its licensing process to recognize the skills of our servicemen.
That is why I introduced, H.R. 4155 , the Veteran Skills to Jobs Act in Congress. This bill addresses the unacceptably high rate of veteran unemployment by directing the head of each federal department and agency to treat military training as sufficient to satisfy training or certification requirements for federal license, so that veterans can get back to work quickly.
Now I want to hear your stories; let me know if you have had difficulties taking your military training and skills from serving our country to the private sector. Please email me your stories to highlight this important issue, and please check back for updates on this important legislation.
