Romney Talks to NGAUS
(Sept. 11) The Republican candidate for president said today he would study an idea repeated this week by the NGAUS chairman to merge the Army and Air Force reserves into the National Guard.
The idea was mentioned Monday by Maj. Gen. Frank Vavala, the NGAUS chairman, at the 134th NGAUS General Conference and Exhibition in Reno, Nev.
Romney, who spoke to the gathering, was asked about the idea during an interview with NATIONAL GUARD soon after his speech.
“It’s something we’ve discussed, but it’s not something I’ll take a definitive position on until it’s been thoroughly discussed, reviewed by the Joint Chiefs, considered by the governors and members of Congress,” he said. “I realize that these institutions were established with different missions in mind and it’s important that those missions be able to be fulfilled.”
NGAUS sees the merger as a way of strengthening a homeland force while saving money for the country by eliminating duplication.
