Office of Science and Technology Assessment

Activities

  • Provides special expertise in safety engineering and industrial hygiene to support program activities in the field and the National Office. Reviews proposed abatement plans and agreements; does onsite evaluations of the effectiveness of control methods; and responds to requests for information to support general duty clause citations or address special situations in the field. Provides assistance in assessing variance applications; participate in standards development activities; conducts training and provides support to the Training Institute; and assists in developing standards interpretations.
  • Disseminates information to the public about hazards and protective measures. Prepares the OSHA Technical Manual (OTM) with detailed information about special hazards and control measures. Develops hazard information bulletins; self-assessment guides and procedures; and videotapes to disseminate up-to-date technical information.
  • Maintains technical liaisons with other organizations. Represents the Agency on the National Response Team and in Federal Emergency Management Administration activities. Participates in development of national consensus standards in ANSI and NFPA.
