This is an ongoing monthly series presented by coordinators from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, New England Region (NN/LM NER), along with guest speakers.

Beyond the SE/A is a monthly webinar from the Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Medical Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM SE/A). Speakers cover different topics of interest to health science librarians, health care practitioners, librarians, and other health focused groups in the region. Topics include new and updated National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources, RML Awardee presentations on their research and outreach programs, Disaster Resources, Electronic Health Records, and many others related to health science and health care. All sessions are online webinars using Adobe Connect, which allows for live phone conversation and online chat. Beyond the SE/A sessions are held on the Third Wednesday of every month at Noon (ET) and last an hour. Sessions are recorded, closed captioned, and made available for later viewing.

This class, designed for beginning proposal writers, will teach you how to apply for funding opportunities. Each component of the grant writing process will be addressed, including: documenting the need; identifying the target population; writing measurable objectives; developing a work plan; an evaluation plan and dissemination plan.

Creating print materials that successfully promote and educate require only a few simple guidelines. You also can save money by simplifying your designs, avoiding expensive, mistakes, and creating attractive templates to use more than once. Topics including focusing on your target audiences, writing benefit statements that engage the reader, and applying the rules of legibility to increase comprehension and retention. The first webinar outlines the rules of legibility and professional tricks that you can apply to existing and new print projects. Then, you will send in a pdf of your improvements. The facilitator will create a second webinar based on your submissions. She will share your examples with notes about your successes. The pdf can be a completed project, a raw sketch with copy, or the completed copy. You can also submit a complete questionnaire about the purpose of the project with an outline, art, design specifications, and text.

This interactive seminar focuses on ways librarians can become more involved in patient safety programs and activities within their institutions and organizations and can provide appropriate resources for health professionals, researchers, administration and staff, and for patients and families. Topics include the international breadth of this subject; understanding definitions and issues related to medical error; locating where patient safety practices and contacts exist within an institution; identifying focused resources; and the librarian as a patient and health care advocate. These four hours of lecture, discussion and brainstorming will help librarians in all fields become effective agents for improving health care in their institutions and our world.

RML Rendezvous is a monthly webcast series presented by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region(NN/LM PNR) coordinators and guest speakers. Each month a different topic, which may include one or more databases from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and other resources of interest to those serving health information needs, is highlighted. Each session includes objectives, assessment questions, and evaluation following the presentation. All sessions are presented as online webcasts using Adobe Connect, allowing for live phone conversation and online chat. Topics in 2013 include: PubMed, toxicology resources, and health literacy. As stewards of knowledge, librarians have an instrumental role to play in supporting open access (OA) initiatives, such as the NIH Public Access Policy. This class will engage librarians in an active discussion of the current state of OA through hands-on, case-based activities. Participants will be challenged to think critically about their roles as advocates, role models, researchers, collection developers and educators and to share best practices. To support this discussion, the instructors will present emerging data on how health personnel use and perceive biomedical literature in their clinical practice and will also introduce implications for OA policies. The instructors will also demonstrate the methods utilized in ascertaining these data and brainstorm ways in which the librarian community can collaborate to continue growing this evidence base.

This class is designed for public librarians and secondary school librarians, teachers, nurses, and counselors. The hands-on class will present an overview of health information needs of teenagers and their information seeking behaviors; review communication skills needed during reference interviews with teenagers; and discuss credible health information resources that are designed for teens. This class presents a general overview of key electronic information resources in the field of public health. The crucial role health information serves in public health will be discussed. Resources will be presented on a wide array of topics including: health education and promotion, evidence-based practice and statistics and data sets. Case studies will be used in class exercises to reinforce learning. This class is designed for information professionals and public health workers interested in increasing their knowledge of the many information resources available on the internet.

This course has been developed as part of NN/LM’s Emergency Preparedness & Response initiative. The class examines strategies to assist librarians with preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies. It was created to follow the "10-Step Approach to Service Continuity Planning" course - either independently or as the second half of the four-hour "Emergency Preparedness for Libraries" course. Topics include identifying strategies for continuing library services during the emergency; disaster planning models; types of resources available for emergency planning and recovery; relationships with first responders, vendors, and other libraries; and issues related to salvage. Class activities provide the opportunity to discuss and continue of developing continuity of service plans and related processes.
