PubMed Basics

To hone basic searching techniques and the ability to develop general search strategies that will take advantage of the various interface access points of PubMed. The difference between PubMed and MEDLINE will be explained. Topics covered include Automatic Term Mapping, Interpreting Search Results and Search Details, understanding Related Articles, Searching with MeSH, Journal searching (Single Citation Matcher) and establishing a My NCBI account. This one-hour or two-hour class is an overview to demonstrate using the aforementioned features of PubMed to search effectively.

Finding Evidence-Based Results in PubMed

To explore PubMed features that facilitates and informs evidence-based research, by identifying the best information available in clinical research areas. This approach will use study characteristics (i.e.: research design and methods) and reviews (including systematic reviews) of the current literature. In achieving this, it will focus on essential vocabulary used to describe study characteristics, clinical queries (clinical study categories), systematic reviews and comparative effectiveness Research (CER) searches. This one-hour class is designed for users having a specific advanced research or health policy interest.

The National Library of Medicine has many prescription, over-the-counter and dietary supplement databases and resources. Learn what databases you should use for the information services in your library. This hands-on-class for librarians will provide an overview of several of NLM’s drug information databases including: Drug Information Portal, Daily Med, Dietary Supplements Labels and evidence-based resources.Objectives: After this workshop participants will be able to: Identify the most appropriate drug information databases for reference, training or research and Develop searches in NLM databases on drug and dietary supplements. In addition to demonstration of the databases, participants will have practice exercises designed to reinforce learning.

Food for Thought: Exploring Nutrition Resources

Beyond the SEA

Beyond the SE/A is a monthly webinar from the Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Medical Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM SE/A). Speakers cover different topics of interest to health science librarians, health care practitioners, librarians, and other health focused groups in the region. Topics include new and updated National Library of Medicine (NLM) resources, RML Awardee presentations on their research and outreach programs, Disaster Resources, Electronic Health Records, and many others related to health science and health care. All sessions are online webinars using Adobe Connect, which allows for live phone conversation and online chat. Beyond the SE/A sessions are held on the Third Wednesday of every month at Noon (ET) and last an hour. Sessions are recorded, closed captioned, and made available for later viewing.

Nursing @ NLM: Resource to support research and clinical practice from the National Library of Medicine

The National Library of Medicine databases support many different aspects of the healthcare spectrum and nursing resources form a key part. The nursing profession is growing and changing, as are the information needs of all nursing professionals. Whether performing research, learning a new skill, or seeking patient care information, nurses need access and the ability to search for quality information. In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of searching PubMed with additional information on the latest updates, an overview of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), and how to manage their searches and citations. Additionally, the workshop will include finding and utilizing information from MedlinePlus (Consumer Health), LactMed, Drugs@NLM, and additional resources of use to nursing professionals. Hands-on exercises will allow participants to explore and evaluate these resources as support for their professional environment.

TOXNET and Beyond: Using the National Library of Medicine's Environmental Health and Toxicology Portal

This course is designed to convey the basics of searching the NLM's TOXNET, a Web-based system of databases in the areas of toxicology, environmental health, and related areas. The course will also teach students to utilize NLM's environmental health and toxicology portal which provides resources beyond the TOXNET databases. Students will learn the content and structure of files covering toxicology data, toxicology literature, toxic releases, and chemical nomenclature. Among the databases highlighted will be TOXLINE, the Hazardous Substances Data Bank, the Integrated Risk Information System, the Toxics Release Inventory, and ChemIDplus. The course, taught by NLM instructors, will be conducted in a computer lab and includes lectures, online demonstration, and hands-on exercises.
