It demonstrates our experience in sharing quality research across the scientific community through publishing and conferences, and our connection with the Biochemical Society. We are embedded in the scientific community and are well placed to support the needs and ambitions of researchers; we offer excellent visibility for your work by making it easy to discover and publish with us. Our new brand is part of an exciting year for Portland Press. We're moving our journals to new websites, which will give research published with us greater visibility, and improving our author services, making it easier to publish with us and leaving authors free to concentrate on their science. The 2013 InCites Journal Citation Reports (Thomson Reuters, 2014) show that Clinical Science, Biochemical Journal, Essays in Biochemistry, Biochemical Society Transactions and Bioscience Reports all received increases in their Impact Factors. The journals are owned by the Biochemical Society and published by Portland Press Limited.
"While they should be treated with care, Impact Factors provide a useful measurement of the level of interest in the research published in academic journals," says Head of Publishing Niamh O'Connor. "I am delighted that the entire family of Portland Press Limited's journals have seen an increase in their Impact Factors. This is a testament to the hardworking people behind our publications and the authors that chose to publish in our journals." Dr O'Connor said of each publication: "Clinical Science has now cemented its place in the top 10 journals publishing primary research in its Medicine (Research & Experimental) category." "Biochemical Journal has a proud history as the Society's oldest publication and its latest Impact Factor reinforces the strong value it provides to the biochemistry sector." "Bioscience Reports continues to go from strength-to-strength in its new life as an entirely open access publication, which it became in 2012. The latest increase reinforces Bioscience Reports as a worthy open access option for authors." "Biochemical Society Transactions, which publishes the proceedings of Biochemical Society conferences, has moved into the top half of publications within the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology category. The Impact Factor increase should be celebrated twice, not just in respect to the high-quality of the journal, but as a reflection of the excellent programme of conferences and events the Biochemical Society puts on every year." "Essays in Biochemistry's Impact Factor increase demonstrates its continuing value as a biochemistry publication for undergraduates and first year postgraduates." Dr O'Connor said: "An across-the-board increase in Impact Factors is an exciting development in a very exciting period for Portland Press Limited, which continues with our move to the HighWire Open Platform next year. With this move, our authors and readers will benefit from the ease in which one can find, read, share and explore our authoritative catalogue of papers." Biochemical Society Chair Steve Busby said the impact factor increases was great news for the Society. "Income generated from the sale of Portland Press Limited's journals goes towards the Society's conferences, grants and policy and education initiatives. This latest acknowledgement of the strength and interest in our journals will flow through to the Society and the entire bioscience community." 28 July 2014 Open access publishing fees waived for low income countriesAuthors from low income countries will no longer have to pay open access author processing charges, the Biochemical Society and Portland Press Limited today announced. The move means that, from September 2014, authors from 71 countries can have their accepted papers published and made publicly available for free in the Biochemical Journal, Clinical Science, and the fully open access journal, Bioscience Reports. Authors from a further 45 countries can receive a discount on their author processing charges. The initiative is part of push by the Biochemical Society, and its wholly-owned publishing subsidiary Portland Press Limited, to support and boost bioscience in the developing world, says Head of Publishing Niamh O'Connor. "Portland Press Limited is committed to supporting scientists and researchers in developing countries. We already provide free or very low cost subscriptions to institutions in 116 countries, as part of the HINARI Access to Research in Health Programme. "We are now going above and beyond that commitment by waiving or reducing author processing charges for authors from these countries, helping to ensure their work is seen on the world stage." All Portland Press Limited journals offer a gold open access option, meaning everyone can view the research online as soon as it is published. Papers will continue to undergo robust peer review processes and adhere to strict publishing guidelines. Biochemical Society Chair Steve Busby says the move reflects the benefit of having a Society-owned publisher. "As a publisher owned by a Society, Portland Press Limited contributes to our mandate to support the advancement of science and the needs of the scientific community. This includes ensuring the breadth of our international community is supported in sharing and discovering knowledge. "By waiving or reducing author processing charges for authors from low income countries, alongside free access to our journals, we can help boost scientific connections with the developing world and further the Society's goal to advance the molecular biosciences internationally." Low income countries will be defined by the HINARI Access to Research in Health Programme. 7 April 2014 Portland Press Ltd to move to the HighWire Open PlatformPortland Press Limited has signed an agreement to move its sector-leading journals, including the Biochemical Journal, Clinical Science and Bioscience Reports, to the HighWire Open Platform. The new journal sites will see more than 10,000 pages of research published annually and a catalogue of papers dating back 100 years hosted on HighWire by mid-2015. "After careful analysis, HighWire was identified as the best platform to take our journals forward," says Kate Baillie, Managing Director of Portland Press Ltd and Chief Executive of the Biochemical Society, the not-for-profit owner of Portland Press Ltd." "HighWire is at the forefront of digital scholarly publishing, with many leading journals in the life sciences relying on its community-based strengths and its track record for innovation and technological support. Our new sites will benefit from this support and will allow us to deliver a modern platform for our readers, authors and subscribers. "For our readers it will be easier to find, read, share and explore our authoritative catalogue of papers, while authors that publish with us will benefit from greater discoverability of their work." Under the agreement, Portland Customer Services can provide its clients hosting services, as part of the range of membership, fulfilment and support services they offer to learned societies, professional associations and the publishing industry. "With our publishing expertise and HighWire's feature-rich platform, this agreement will allow us to deliver even better journal services to learned societies and publishers. The surplus from the sale of our publications and services are returned to the global scientific community via the activity of the Biochemical Society," says Ms Baillie. 3 February 2014 Access to scientific and academic research now available at UK Public LibrariesThe Biochemical Society and Portland Press Limited are pleased to announce their participation in the Access to Research initiative, providing free licensed access to over a quarter of a million journal articles and conference proceedings through participating UK libraries. Through Portland Press Limited, the Society's wholly-owned publishing subsidiary, the Biochemical Journal, Clinical Science and Biochemical Society Transactions have joined over 3000 peer-reviewed journals included in the initiative. Access to Research is the result of a unique collaboration between publishers and public libraries, under the leadership of the Publishers Licensing Society, and was launched in response to the Finch Report, 'Accessibility, Sustainability, Excellence: How to expand access to research'. The Finch Report recommended that the major subscription publishers should grant public libraries a licence to provide free-access to peer-reviewed journals and conference proceeding. Commenting on the Access to Research initiative Niamh O'Connor, Head of Publishing, Portland Press Limited, said: "Through Portland Press Limited's support of the Access to Research initiative we are seeking to ensure that we maximise the accessibility of articles published in our journals, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of scholarly publishing activities." All public libraries throughout the UK are being encouraged to participate in the two-year pilot through their local authorities.
