United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

Ohio

NRC's Regional Office in Chicago (Region III) is responsible for carrying out the agency's duties in Ohio. The United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) is currently constructing a Gas Centrifuge Uranium Enrichment Facility in Piketon, Ohio. Known as the American Centrifuge Plant, that facility began construction in May 2007. In addition, there is a Gaseous Diffusion Uranium Enrichment Facility in cold standby in Piketon, Ohio, which USEC leased from the U.S. Department of Energy. That facility has been shut down since March 2001. Ohio is an Agreement State.

More information about Ohio's role in ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials can be obtained from the NRC Office of State Program's Directory of State Regulations, Legislation, and Web Sites.
