The Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) program encourages small businesses to locate in and hire from the nation’s most blighted communities. 

Small firms participating in the program can receive competitive advantages in winning federal contracts.  Three percent of all federal contracting dollars should be awarded to HUBZone firms annually.

Finding HUBZone Opportunities at the Army

Lt. Col. Jim Blanco, the HUBZone Program Manager for the small business office at the Department of the Army, provided this valuable and helpful presentation at the HUBZone Contractors National Council's Western Regional Conference in San Diego, California.

The presentation includes a general introduction to the Army small business office as well as the guidance available on their web site for finding HUBZone business.  For example, doing a Federal Supply Code search can help identify what offices want to buy the goods and services that a HUBZone firm has to sell.

The HUBZone Contractors National Council is a private, nonprofit, membership association.  The Council advocates legislation to strengthen the HUBZone program and educates federal agencies on their responsibilities to increase contracting opportunities for HUBZone firms. 

Member firms also benefit from conferences with training opportunities to refresh and strengthen marketing and other business skills, as well as networking opportunities with other firms and potential partners.
