Deputy Chief of Mission Kathleen A. Kavalec

Kathleen Kavalec assumed her duties as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission to UNESCO in July, 2010.  Prior to her arrival at the Mission, Ms. Kavalec served as Deputy Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe, Eurasia and Central Asia.  Earlier, she served as Director of Conflict Prevention in the Office of the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization at the Department of State, where she was responsible for overseeing the 1207 Conflict Stabilization Fund.  Previous assignments include service as the U.S. Cultural Attache in Bucharest, Romania and as Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine. 

A career political officer, Ms. Kavalec joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1985.  She has served in a variety of diplomatic positions at U.S. Missions in Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, and Romania.   Her foreign languages include French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Romanian.

A native of California, Ms. Kavalec received her A.B. in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and her M.S.F.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
