CAPT JAMES L. MCCAULEY
CAPT James L. McCauley
Commandant of Cadets
Message to Prospective Cadets

Since 1790, in war and peace, the U.S. Coast Guard has protected America’s maritime interests. Today’s global community places the Coast Guard at the forefront of public service. Our flexibility allows us to carry out economic, environmental, humanitarian and homeland security missions, while serving as an integral part of national security.

Upon your appointment to the Academy, you will take an oath of office as a cadet in the Coast Guard, and you will begin your development toward becoming a commissioned officer in the United States Armed Forces.

Life as a Coast Guard officer is extremely demanding. You will be expected to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and to selflessly serve the American people. America will place special trust and confidence in your integrity, dedication, ability and good character. Your success will depend directly on your daily commitment to the Coast Guard’s Core Values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.

As a cadet and an officer you will be tested physically, mentally and emotionally. While the demands are many, the rewards are immense. You will influence the performance of the men and women you lead in the field. You will save lives, keep drugs off the street, protect the environment and keep America safe. You will have the experiences and opportunities of a lifetime.

As one of the nation’s best and brightest young people, you show great potential to be of service to the nation as a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard. You are America’s future and have the opportunity to lead the Coast Guard into the 21st century. Be ready to make a difference!
