Commander’s email template for the Post-Deployment Health Reassessment

Each one of you demonstrated outstanding dedication to duty and military professionalism during your tour of duty in xxxxx. You are the reason we have the finest military in the world and I’m proud to serve with you.

Since you’ve been back, you’ve applied that same dedication to the mission here. Now, I’m asking you to focus on your own health and wellbeing. During the weeks and months of deployment, the mission had to come first. It was all encompassing. Now that you’re back, you need to make some time for yourself and your family.

I know what you went through while you were deployed, including harsh, high threat conditions, long hours, and separation from your family. In spite of it all, you stayed true to the mission. But, it can take a toll on your health. You may not have noticed it then, but you may notice it now or you may notice it in the future. I want to make sure you have every opportunity to take care of yourself.

That’s why I’ve directed the completion of a force health protection program called the Post-Deployment Health Reassessment, or PDHRA. This PDHRA process will give you the opportunity to learn a little more about some of the common conditions people experience when they get back from operational deployments and what you can do about them. It will also give you a chance to identify any health or adjustment concerns you might have and talk to a health care provider about those issues. If you feel fine, but just have some questions you want to ask a health care professional, you can ask those too. We are going to start this process on xxxx. Specific instructions on your part in the process are attached.

This program is for your benefit. It also benefits the unit when you take the necessary steps to maintain a high level of medical readiness. Taking care of yourself is just the right thing to do. It’s the right thing for you. It’s the right thing for your unit. It’s the right thing for your family. I view taking care of your health as another sign of military professionalism. I encourage each of you to take full advantage of this program. I will be participating in the PDHRA and I expect each of you to give it your full attention as well.
