Army Maj. Gen. Kenneth S. Dowd became the Director of Logistics Operations for the Defense Logistics Agency in August 2012. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as Commander, 1st Sustainment Command at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.
A native of Kentucky, he was commissioned in 1979 through the ROTC program at Cumberland College, Ky. His military schools include the Quartermaster Basic and Advanced courses, the Logistics Executive Development Course, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He also holds a master's degree in logistics management from the Florida Institute of Technology.

He was initially assigned as Battalion Motor Officer, 702nd Maintenance Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, 8th United States Army, Korea. Later positions included Battalion Motor Officer; Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Supply and Transportation Battalion; and Intelligence and Operations Officer, 3rd Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Carson, Colo.

In June 1985, Maj. Gen. Dowd attended the Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course, U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Fort Lee, Va.  Following the course, he was assigned as Logistics Staff Officer, and later, Supply and Service Management Officer, U.S. Army Logistics Management Center, Fort Lee. He attended the Florida Institute of Technology and also the U.S. Army Logistics Management Center, Fort Lee, from August 1987 to June 1988.
In June 1988, Maj. Gen. Dowd served as the Supply and Service Officer, Production Planning and Control Division. Later assignments include Operations Chief, Supply and Services, and Director of Logistics and Deputy Director, Engineering and Logistics, Sharpe Army Depot, Lathrop, Calif. Following his attendance at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., from August 1990 to June 1991, Maj. Gen. Dowd served in a variety of positions including Support Operations Officer; Executive Officer, 3rd Forward Support Battalion; and Chief, Division Materiel Management Center, Division Support Command, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army, Germany.

In August 1998, Maj. Gen. Dowd was attended the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa. Between June 1999 and June 2001, he served as Chief, Army Logistics Operations Center, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C. Maj. Gen. Dowd took command of the Division Support Command, 1st Armored Division, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq, in June 2001. This was followed by positions as Acting Deputy Chief of Staff and later as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army. In August 2004, Maj. Gen. Dowd returned to Washington, D.C., to become the Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, U.S. Army.

In June 2007, Maj. Gen. Dowd became the Director for Logistics, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. In July 2010, he assumed command of 1st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Central, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Kuwait, and Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan.

His personal awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with five oak leaf clusters, and the Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
