N.C. Cemetery Commission

The N.C. Cemetery Commission is established under the provisions of Chapter 65, Article 9 of the North Carolina General Statutes. The Commission is composed of nine members.

The Commission is appointed by the Governor and the General Assembly. The Governor appoints seven members of the Commission: two owners and/or managers of cemeteries in North Carolina; three nominees submitted by the N.C. Cemetery Association; and two public members who have no financial interest in and are not involved in management of any cemetery or funeral-related business. One member is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and one member is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Speaker of the House. All members serve four-year terms. Additionally, the Administrator is appointed by the Governor upon recommendation of the Cemetery Commission to act as its administrative agent for daily operations.

The Commission is responsible for the regulation and supervision of cemeteries, cemetery management organizations, cemetery sales organizations, cemetery brokers and individual pre-need cemetery salespeople licensed under the laws of North Carolina.
