Users & visiting scientists

Jefferson Lab provides many unique and highly sophisticated experimental user facilities. These facilities serve users and visiting scientists from universities, other laboratories in the U.S. and abroad, and industry.

Currently, more than 1,300 users are engaged in research at the lab. Jefferson Lab also has more than 800 employees and contractors, who share work space and research facilities with users and visiting scientists.

An Invitation letter is required at the port of entry for all non US citizens requesting a Business Visa (B-1, WB) to participate in research, workshops, conferences and meetings at JLab. These activities are prohibited with Tourist Visa (B-2, WT)

The User Liaison Office is available to assist all visiting scientists and students with getting ID badges, training, signing up for computer accounts and all other matters related to conducting research at Jefferson Lab.

The User Group coordinates communication with Jefferson Lab staff scientists and management, and seeks to promote effective utilization of the lab's research facilities. More than 1,000 nuclear physicists from more than 200 institutions are members of the group.
