About the Challenge
We’re looking for innovative ways to increase public awareness of the laws enforced by DOL to ensure fair and safe workplaces. The challenge is to utilize inspection and compliance information from the hotel, motel, restaurant and retail industries to help workers and consumers take educated action.
You pick the technology…
- the web
- a personal computer
- a mobile handheld device, or
- any platform broadly accessible to the open Internet
we provide the data.
DOL offers a wealth of data that often goes unnoticed by the public, but we require that you use these two datasets in your application:
-
OSHA Inspections
http://developer.dol.gov/DOL-Compliance-OSHA-DATASET.htm
From this dataset, your application will have to present these two elements:- Location (address) of site inspected
- If current penalty, what was the amount
-
Wage and Hour Inspections
http://developer.dol.gov/DOL-Compliance-WHD-DATASET.htm
From this dataset, make sure your solution presents these elements to the user:- Trade Name
- Address (Address, City, State, Zip)
- NAIC Description
- Period of Findings (Findings Date Start, Findings Date End)
- FLSA Violations Indicator
- Child Labor Findings Indicator
The APIs can be found at http://developer.dol.gov/. In addition, you’re encouraged to draw from online data and resources from www.data.gov or other public sources.
What's in it for you?
Applications that best satisfy the competition criteria may receive cash prizes up to $15,000 for the first prize winner. Contestants are encouraged to combine DOL data with other publicly accessible data feeds from around the web, and to be creative in exploring approaches for realizing the goals.
Judging Criteria

Is the application creative, interesting, and easy to use? (40%)
How to Enter
Contestants must register for the contest on this website by creating an account between July 14th, 2011, and September 14th, 2011. Registrants will receive an email to verify their account and may then enter their submissions via the "Post a Submission" tab (Submissions).
- Submissions may be any kind of software tool, be it for the web, a personal computer, a mobile handheld device, console, or any platform broadly accessible to the open Internet.
- If the software tool is not accessible to or by the Administrator and Judges for review purposes (via the web with a URL or mobile app store), a link to a video of the working tool may be submitted. In such case, the Administrator has the right to request access to the Submission in person or via any reasonable manner to verify any of the software tool’s criteria.
- A Submission may be disqualified if it does not function as expressed in the description.
- All Submissions must be available for public use and evaluation by September 14th, 2011, in order to be considered for judging purposes.
- Once a Submission is made, the Contestant cannot make any changes or alterations to the Submission until the judging is complete. The approximate date by which the judging will be complete is September 30th, 2011.
For all Submissions, the Contestant agrees that DOL will have the ability to release the code as open source at its discretion (see Rules for more details).
