The U.S. Air Force Academy is a unique institution -- one of lasting value to the Air Force and to the nation. Although it is a government owned and operated institution of higher learning, the Academy depends heavily on private funding to support military, academic, athletic, and character development areas of excellence along with a few institutional advancement and support programs.

Fortunately, as the Academy has matured, it has attracted more philanthropic activity. Graduates, national and community leaders, retired servicemembers and friends who believe in the Academy and its objectives have been generous, and several private nonprofit organizations exist to provide financial support to the institution.

The Association of Graduates* manages numerous endowment and memorial funds and provides funding for military, character development, leadership, academic, and athletic programs through the Air Force Academy Fund, the Sabre Society, and project-specific fund-raising efforts.

The Air Force Academy Foundation's* generosity allows the Academy today to enjoy Falcon Stadium, the Eisenhower Golf Course Blue Course, Farish Memorial Recreation Area and the Barry Goldwater Visitor Center. Additionally, they provide support to the Fund for American Studies, which allows cadets to attend a summer course at Georgetown University to study economics and political principles.

The Falcon Foundation* provides up to 100 private prep school scholarships annually to prospective cadets. Through endowments, the foundation also provides private funding for various academic and cadet programs.

The Academy Research and Development Institute* provides an avenue for educational grants and the endowment of academic department chairs. The Academy currently has eight fully funded chairs filled by nationally recognized educators and scholars.

The Friends of the Air Force Academy Library* solicits and maintains valuable historic collections and provides private funding in support of the Cadet Library.

The USAFA Endowment* is the fund-raising arm of the Association of Graduates. The Endowment funds large-scale strategic initiatives of the Academy superintendent, such as the Holaday Athletic Center and Center for Character and Leadership Development.

In light of shrinking defense budget dollars, increased private funding is essential to help the Air Force Academy program the standard of excellence expected by citizens of the United States. To provide continuity and support to these organizations and friends giving private support, the Development and Alumni Programs Division under the Director of Communications was established and chartered with "creating and maintaining an environment where friendship or a gift to the Academy is a desirable, positive, and on-going experience." As such, the office is responsible for coordinating efforts among organizations, ensuring standardized recognition of friends and donors and proper stewardship of those gifts and gift properties received.
