Historic Property Identification - Where to Start
The Section 106 review process requires the agency official to identify historic properties in the area of potential effect (see 36 CFR § 800.4). This identification effort focuses on properties that are eligible for and/or listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The links provided here are starting points for historic property identification.
This page contains direct links to the National Register of Historic Places research page and to available on-line inventories of the State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO). These sites may not be comprehensive and the degree and quality of information varies widely among the SHPOs. Local government records are another good source. Also, § 800.4 requires the agency official to consult with the SHPO and other stakeholders about other sources of historic property information.
