In response to a lawsuit filed by Public Citizen and Professor Stanley Kutler, the National Archives, the Nixon Estate, and Public Citizen established
the negotiated Tapes Settlement Agreement of 1996. This agreement established a schedule for the processing of the Nixon White House Tapes.
The schedule separated the tapes into several
chronological segments for review and release:
- The first segment included all of the Cabinet Room tapes, to be followed by all the remaining tapes divided into five different segments.
- Nixon archivists reviewed entire conversations as determined by the reviewers and released each conversation in full context.
- To date, the Nixon Library has reviewed and opened approximately 2,636 hours of the Complete Conversations from the Nixon White House Tapes for public access.
Available Complete Conversations Releases
Conversations took place in the Cabinet Room between February 16, 1971 and July 11, 1973.
Conversations took place in the Oval Office, the EOB, and other locations between February 16, 1971 and July 18, 1973.
