osd/js requester service center

About the OSD/JS FOIA Office (OFOI)

The OSD/JS FOIA Requester Service Center supports all actions related to Freedom of Information requests submitted by the public for access to records under the control of the Offices of the Secretary of Defense and Joint Staff. The Center is divided into three specific branches: the Initial Processing Branch; the Appeals, Policy, and Litigation Branch; and the Program Management Branch (see organizational chart (PPT | 358 KB)). The Initial Processing Branch is divided into three teams: Team B - Fast Track Requests and Mid-Term Complex Requests; Team C-Highly Complex Requests and Special Project Cases; and Team D-Legacy Cases (backlog cases and requests for older records). The Appeals, Policy, and Litigation Branch, consists of a Chief and three action officers. All administrative support is provided by the Program Management Branch.

Each Military Service, the Combatant Commands, and the Defense Agencies operate their own FOIA Requester Service Centers. However, if the public does not know which DoD activity can address their specific area of interest, we can assist in identifying the DoD activity that is in the best position to assist the requester.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense and Joint Staff FOIA Requester Service Center website was launched on September 11, 2007 using the website address of the former DoD FOIA Office. Department of Defense FOIA guidance and policy is now available from the Defense Freedom of Information Policy Office (DFOIPO) website.

Our office hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday (Eastern Time). Please select the Contact Us page for contact information.
