Good Catch

We recognize that it can be a burden for passengers to take their shoes off when passing through an airport checkpoint, however doing so gives TSA officers the best means of thoroughly screening footwear and keeping the traveling public safe.
Every so often passengers attempt to conceal prohibited items in their shoes in an effort to evade security. One such instance happened in early May at San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), where a TSA officer spotted something suspicious stashed inside a passenger’s shoe.
Concealed in the soles of the shoe, hidden from the naked eye, was a knife. Fortunately, our officer astutely saw the prohibited item during X-ray screening. Although a knife may not cause catastrophic damage, this is yet another example of our officers detecting an artfully concealed item that could have been a more dangerous and threatening weapon.
