Character and Leadership Education DivisionThe Character and Leadership Education Division oversees four graduation requirement seminars for each year of the cadet experience along with one optional adventure-based learning course. More than 900 volunteer mentors relate valuable character and leadership lessons as they facilitate discussions with cadets during approximately 200 seminars each year.

tabVECTOR
VECTORVital Effective Character Through Observation and Reflection is an interactive, on-site seminar focused on personal leadership and self-reflection. Fourth-class cadets attend two five-hour sessions in the fall and spring semesters. Topics include establishing purpose, developing vision, assessing personal values and acknowledging influence.

VECTOR illustrates the importance of courageous followership and a strong foundation of personal leadership. The seminar exposes attendees to various leadership styles and qualities through multimedia presentations and senior leader messages. Movie and video clip exemplars and reflective writing exercises facilititate the discussion of character and leadership concepts involving cadets' lives at the Academy and in the Air Force.
tabR&R
Respect and ResponsibilityRespect and Responsibility is a seven-hour workshop that helps third-class cadets develop their interpersonal leadership skills through a variety of experimental exercises. Respect, integrity, diversity and the power of attitude are some of the prominent themes. Students attempt a series of activities involving emotional risk that focus on human relations and diversity issues.

One of R&R's goals is to help participants recognize and understand how differences and similarities impact interpersonal leadership behaviors. Additionally, participants learn to appreciate the impact of respect and to challenge views and biases that undermine a positive command environment.
tabACES
ACESThe Academy Center Enrichment Seminar is a program for seniors and culminates their character and leadership development journey. This eight-hour offsite seminar focuses on organizational leadership and the ethical demands placed on Air Force officers. Attendees personally select and brief various topics of interest to today's organizational leaders. During roundtable discussion, participants discuss ethical dilemmas drawn from mentors' real-life circumstances. Additionally, to help prepare them for entry into commissioned service, cadets are exposed to senior officer and senior enlisted perspectives during roundtable sessions.
tabLIFT
LIFTLeaders in Flight Today is an eight-hour offsite seminar for second-class cadets. While VECTOR and R&R focus on personal and interpersonal leadership, LIFT begins to prepare upperclassmen for military leadership in earnest by focusing on the dynamics of team leadership.

LIFT participants discuss servant leadership, building trust and loyalty to individual values. These small-group discussions are balanced against the perspectives and experiences of mentors. LIFT also includes an invaluable personality assessement tool, enabling cadets to better understand themselves and their teammates. A culminating exercise jump starts the journey as cadets seize the opportunity to field test the seminar's major insights.
tabABL
ABLAdventure-Based Learning consists of high- and low-ropes hands-on instruction and exercises. These include but are not limited to "Alpine Tower" climbing exercises, zip line experiences and various mental and physical challenges.

The ABL programs are available for cadets and other military organizations and are not mandatory. However, many Academy and non-Academy organizations experience remarkable personal growth by participating in courses throughout the year.
