Superintendent's Notes

Huntoon.jpgIt has been a superb summer of tough and rigorous field training, of cadet troop leader training with our US Army here and overseas, and of cultural immersion and internship programs across the globe. The goal? Leadership development of the United States Corps of Cadets to build the leaders of character who will serve as officers for our Army. Cadet Field Training at Camp Buckner and the adjacent areas of USMA tested our Yearlings every day. They never flinched and they all grew stronger. Between demanding live fire training, obstacle courses, advanced land navigation and patrolling they more than proved their mettle. The New Cadets of 2016 proved equally tough in their crucible of Cadet Basic Training. From hand grenades to fire team live fire and from rifle marksmanship to rappelling, new cadets marched back into West Point proudly carrying their new motto, “With Honor We Lead."

Now we shift to focused and equally demanding academic study, one of the three fundamental pillars of the United States Military Academy. Recently honored as one of the very best schools in the nation by several sources, West Point’s extraordinary staff and faculty is well prepared to take each of the four classes through our first tier program of study. At the same time, each cadet will sustain either the physical fitness regimen of a Division 1 team, highly competitive club sports, or playing against each other in spirited company intramurals; all honoring the direction of former Superintendent Douglas MacArthur who declared every cadet an athlete every day. This fall will also see a terrific lineup of seven home football games at Michie Stadium with a seasoned squad of talented players aimed at a winning season.

In all these areas cadets are learning every day in every domain - military, academic, and physical - how to best prepare for their leadership responsibilities as graduates. The record of those graduates in peace and war continues to serve as the greatest inspiration for us all. We are confident the Corps will follow suit when it is their turn to lead with character.

Army Strong!
