In an effort to gain control of the divided city of West Berlin, Germany, the Soviet Union blocked all land traffic to the city in June 1948. During the next fifteen months, the Allies flew 277,264 missions delivering over 2 million tons of supplies to sustain the people of West Berlin. Although the blockade ended in May 1949, the Allies continued the flights to build up stockpiles of food, medicine, and fuel. (30 Sep 1949)
