Michael D. Herman

Mike Herman is the Executive Officer for Administration in the Director's Office at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As the Executive Officer, Herman manages the personal support staff, organizational policies, and day to day operations for the NIST Director and the other members of the Senior NIST management team. He also supervises the support for NIST from the Management & Organization division which provides service in the areas of audit, management controls, and government directed programs such as the Freedom of Information Act, the Paperwork Reduction Act, and records management. Herman joined the federal workforce and started with NIST in October 2010. Prior to becoming a civilian employee, Herman served 30.5 years on active duty as a Naval Officer and retired as a Surface Warfare Captain in April 2010. In addition to service onboard numerous surface ship combatants and tours of duty ashore, Herman has extensive experience in personnel program management, training, and policy development. His education background includes an undergraduate degree in political science as well as the completion of a resident program and master's degree from the Naval War College in national security and strategic studies.
