Corps increases water releases from Lake Okeechobee

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District has increased the amount of water flowing from Lake Okeechobee to the Caloosahatchee River. The new target flow from the lake to the Caloosahatchee Estuary is 1,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) as measured at W.P. Franklin Lock (S-79) near Fort Myers. There are no target releases for the St. Lucie Estuary, although runoff from the St. Lucie Canal will continue to pass through the St. Lucie Lock as needed.

Investigation at Camp Gordon Johnston continues

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to continue fieldwork for its Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) at the Camp Gordon Johnston formerly used defense site into March 2013.

Site 1 Impoundment completion contract awarded, construction moving forward

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a nearly $48 million contract for the completion of Phase One of the Site 1 Impoundment Project to Munilla Construction Management LLC (d/b/a MCM) of Miami, Fla., Jan. 18.

St. Lucie Canal between Stuart and Palm City to partially close for construction

There is a scheduled closure of St. Lucie Canal South Fork at the Indian Street Bridge construction zone between Stuart and Palm City in Martin County, Fla. There will be a daily waterway closure from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Feb. 18 through March 4, 2013.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worked rapidly to repair a levee breach caused by Hurricane Sandy in Mantoloking, N.J. The breach occurred at the end of the only bridge onto the barrier island, effectively cuting it off from the rest of the state. At the peak of the response effort, the Corps had nearly 4,000 employees from across the nation engaged in more than 38 FEMA mission assignments, exceeding a total of $134 million.

With a mighty heave, Damon Wolfe, geodesist with Jacksonville District, launches the NOVA Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) on a flight over Lake Okeechobee. The Corps used photos from the UAV to track the progress of various plant species at the lake.
