With summer here and kids out of school, are they spending too much time watching TV or playing video games? Let's get them moving.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Eating too much and exercising too little can lead children to become overweight, which can cause serious health problems -- such as diabetes and high blood pressure -- that can follow them into adulthood. To help kids be healthy:
- Encourage them to be physically active for at least one hour every day. If they see you being active and having fun, they are more likely to follow suit.
- Offer them healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, low-fat yogurt, and lean meats.
- Bake or steam foods instead of frying.
- And give kids low-fat milk instead of sugar-sweetened drinks.
