If a brake light goes out, you could drive around for a long time without knowing it. Similarly, if you have celiac disease, you might not know it for years.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Celiac disease damages the small intestines and interferes with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food. Nearly 1% of the US population is affected.
Figuring out that you have it can be tough, because symptoms like diarrhea and stomach pain are common to other diseases.
If your doctor determines that you do have celiac disease, it can be treated by adopting a gluten-free diet consisting of foods such as wild rice, fruits and beans.
To learn more about this and other digestive diseases, visit our website at NIDDK or majic1023.com. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
