Statement from Surgeon General, Dr. Regina M. Benjamin, on the Selection of Jeffrey Levi, Ph.D. as chair of the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health

I am announcing the selection of Jeffrey Levi, Ph.D., as chair of the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. Dr. Levi is executive director of Trust for America’s Health, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to making disease prevention a national priority.

Jeff Levi, like other members of the Advisory Group brings a wealth of experience. He is professor of Health Policy at George Washington University School of Public Health and has conducted research on HIV/AIDS, Medicaid, integrating public health, and the health care delivery system.  Dr. Levi previously served as deputy director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy and was an associate editor of the American Journal of Public Health. Dr. Levi will serve as a strong leader of the Advisory Group.

The President established the Advisory Group as required by the Affordable Care Act to provide policy and program recommendations and advise the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council (National Prevention Council) on chronic disease prevention and management, integrative health care practices and health promotion.

I am looking forward to the guidance of this non-federal member Advisory Group as we strive to improve the health and quality of life for individuals, families and communities by moving our country from a system of sick care to one based on wellness and prevention.
