The governments of the United States and Brazil today formalized a partnership with the Government of Honduras to increase agriculture production, decrease undernutrition, and promote renewable energy in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.

In January 2012, the Peace Corps announced that it would re-establish its program after suspending it in 2004. The new program is being opened with significant support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Specifically, the workshop agenda will focus on three main themes; increasing stability and transparency in policy reforms regarding land, seeds, taxes and trade; improving the private sector investment climate for long term economic growth; and developing domestic and regional input policies that encourage greater private sector participation in the production, marketing, and trade in seeds and other inputs.

Crucially, this project ensures that families' livestock will be healthier after a crisis. While the emphasis in a traditional emergency response program is on feeding the people—not the animals—this coordinated effort works to ensure the survival of Nigeriens' most valuable asset.

For the Peace Corps, food security is not just about agriculture. Peace Corps Volunteers working across sectors—from environment to community economic development—are an important part of Feed the Future.

This note (on Agrilinks) discusses the potential for evaluations of Feed the Future programs in Haiti and Tanzania to contribute to a broader learning agenda. It then sets out some ideas on additional examples of ways in which Feed the Future might be able to generate some knowledge that could increase agricultural productivity.
