U.S. Marshals Arrest Escapee

Honolulu, HI – On Thursday, August 09, 2012 at approximately 1:00 pm, the U.S. Marshals Hawaii Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended James K. Gahler, Jr. without incident in Waikiki by Deputy U.S. Marshals and Hawaii State Sheriffs. After eluding authorities for 3 days, 38 year-old Gahler Jr. was wanted for Escape. Gahler was being held at Mahoney Hale Residential Re-Entry Center when he willfully failed to return to the institutional facility Monday morning within the time prescribed by the facility. Gahler was therefore placed on official escape status.

On August 12, 2011, Gahler was sentenced to serve 18 months on a Supervised Release Violation. As part of his sentence, Gahler was transferred to Mahoney Hale Residential Re-Entry Center on June 14, 2012 from the Federal Detention Center. Gahler was scheduled to be released on November 29, 2012 via good conduct time release without any supervision to follow. However, by escaping, Gahler now faces additional charges. Gahler was initially charged with credit card fraud and aggravated identity theft in 2008. Gahler is now in federal custody pending court proceedings. Gahler will be charged with escape.
