Farmington, NM - Farmington Police and Deputy
United States Marshals and Task Force Officers with the Southwest Fugitive
Investigative Team (SWIFT) Task Force Arrested Stephanie Mendez. Mendez was
wanted on a Grand Jury Indictment charging her with two counts of vehicular
homicide.
The Albuquerque Police Department referred Mendez’s case to the SWIFT Task Force
in Farmington, because they believed Mendez had fled to the Navajo Reservation
to avoid apprehension. SWIFT investigators from the U.S. Marshals Service,
Farmington Police Department, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and the New
Mexico State Police confirmed that Mendez may have sought refuge on the
reservation and had begun the extradition process with the Navajo Nation.
On 08-05-11 Mendez contacted SWIFT task force officers by telephone and stated
she wanted to meet and turn herself in. SWIFT members agreed to meet Mendez at a
local public park in Farmington, New Mexico where she was taken into custody
without incident. Mendez was transported to the San Juan County Detention Center
where she was booked on her Vehicular homicide charges. This case was a
collaborative effort between the Albuquerque Police Department, State of New
Mexico District Attorney's office, Farmington police Department. San Juan County
Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State Police and the United States Marshals
Service.
