After a sixth-place finish in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011, Southern California Institute of Architecture and California Institute of Technology have joined forces once again for Solar Decathlon 2013.

With its 2013 entry, the Sci-Arc/Caltech team wants to advance architecture toward its future state by producing a housing prototype that is clean, safe, and sustainable. Although the team recognizes that architecture and energy use are of utmost importance in the competition, it also believes it is important to push the envelope of architectural culture and social experience. By pushing engineering forward and architecture into new, unfamiliar territory, the team expects to produce a prototype that not only resolves the needs of energy conservation but also delivers a new future for architecture. To that end, the SCI-Arc/Caltech team is conceiving an inflatable housing prototype that sheds new light on a 50-year building practice that has shown great promise.
