Assessing Family Strengths & Needs
Formal assessment typically occurs with families that are experiencing challenges in parenting and are in need of intervention services. A comprehensive assessment may not be needed and often is not formally conducted in family support programs. However, in all settings where support and services are provided, the worker helps the family to assess whether help is needed and what type, the strengths and resources the family has to build upon, and what next steps will best assist the family.
In family support and preservation services the worker assists the family in identifying strengths, needs, and current resources in order to formulate a plan to address their concerns and help them achieve their goals. Assessment is an ongoing process that may take a number of different forms, but always with the family at the center of the process.
