USS Monterey gives back to Romania

CONSTANTA, Romania (June 8, 2011) - Sailors attached to the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) dance together with children from the Constanta Kindergarden during a community relations project (COMREL). During the COMREL Monterey Sailors and Marines from the Black Sea Rotational Force-11 (BSRF-11) gave out Project Handclasp toys and school supplies. Monterey is homeported out of Norfolk and is supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation effort in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

CONSTANTA, Romania – Sailors and Marines delivered donated Project Handclasp supplies to orphanages and hospitals in the Constanta and Tulcea regions, June 8, during a community relations project (COMREL).

Sailors from the USS Monterey (CG 61) and Marines from the Black Sea Rotation Force-11 (BSRF-11) gave out Project Handclasp toys, school supplies and health kits.

Project Handclasp is a U.S. Navy program that receives, collects, consolidates and stores humanitarian, educational, and goodwill material for transportation on naval vessels and distribution by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel on behalf of American citizens to needy people overseas.

“This is a huge opportunity for Monterey Sailors; I hope the Sailors experience the gift of giving.” said Lt. Scot Sroka, Monterey chaplain. “While we to not give to get, it is amazing how much Sailors receive when giving of themselves.”

Capt. James W. Kilby, Monterey’s commanding officer stated that the Monterey enjoys a crew which has always had more volunteers than we have spots on the community relations projects list and the ship hopes to continue what they started from the beginning of our cruise.

“It’s not everyday you get to give back to an elementary school in Romania,” said Aerographer’s Mate 1st Class Quintron Perry, COMREL participant. “I feel today we changed children’s lives by delivering these toys, school supplies and our visit, I could see smiles as soon as I got off the bus.”

Monterey, homeported out of Norfolk, is on a scheduled six-month deployment in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of responsibility.
