SANTORINI, Greece — The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) visited the naval forces of Egypt and Greece Nov. 10-15.
The purpose of CNO's visit was to further enhance the global maritime partnerships between the nations and explore possible areas for increased cooperation.
CNO Adm. Gary Roughead met with his counterparts Vice Adm. Mohab Mameesh, commander in chief of the Egyptian Naval Forces, in Alexandria, Egypt and Vice Adm. Georgious Karmakalikis, chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff in Athens.
In Egypt, the CNO toured Alexandria and Abu Qir naval bases where he went aboard Egyptian Navy Ships (ENS) Harm Elsheikh, ENS Rashid and the Royal Yacht Mahroussa; met with Sailors of the Naval Medical Research Unit 3 team and with Egyptian Navy and Ministry of Defense officials. He also participated in a pass and review and welcoming ceremony at the Egyptian Naval College where he spoke to the cadets about the value of leadership.
"In all things that navies do, nothing is more important than leadership," Roughead said. "You'll be trusted with sailors who will look to you to do the right thing. You must inspire them, care for them and encourage their development as skilled members of your Navy and your team."
While in Greece, CNO met with Vice Adm. Loannis Karaiskos, chief of the Hellenic Fleet, and visited Naval Station Amfialis where he toured a SUBR landing craft Hellenic Ship (HS) Kerkyra, and also toured HS Protefs, HS Salamis, HS Roussen and HS Evniko stationed at Salamis Naval Base.
While speaking at an event in Santorini, Roughead recognized the strong relationship between the United States and Greece, emphasizing the value both navies put on tradition.
"I am so grateful for the relationship, the hospitality, for the support and for the friendship that exists between our navies, between our nations and between the citizens of Greece and the citizens of the United States."
To finish his trip, CNO met with sailors, Marines and senior leadership of the USS Ponce (LPD 15), who were enjoying a port visit in Greece while on deployment. Roughead took the time to express his gratitude to the crew for their hard work and dedication as they near the end of their extended deployment.
