09/10/12 Publication Advisory - New Justice Department Bulletin Highlights Effects of Drinking on Adolescent Development
The Office of Justice Programs’ Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) today released the bulletin Effects and Consequences of Underage Drinking. It presents findings on the potential neurological damage, social and emotional consequences, health and safety risks and academic problems the underage drinker may experience.

08/09/12 Nearly 3.4 Million Violent Crimes Per Year Went Unreported to Police From 2006 to 2010
More than half of the nation’s violent crimes, or nearly 3.4 million violent victimizations per year, went unreported to the police between 2006 and 2010, according to a new report published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).

08/02/12 Federal Agencies Convene Week-Long Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC
Focuses on Critical Youth Issues and Youth Leadership
This week, more than 200 American Indian youth and adult leaders from 53 tribal communities across the country convened at the week-long 2012 National Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC. Students arrived Saturday to attend the Summit which featured Federal officials from the White House and the Departments of Justice, Interior, Health and Human Services and Education. The Summit provided a unique opportunity for Federal officials to hear directly from tribal youth through discussions on topics such as education, health, cultural preservation, civic engagement, and leadership development.

The disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz on May 25, 1979, of Adam Walsh in 1981, and the murders of 29 children in Atlanta during those same years forced our nation to realize we had no national response system in place to coordinate the efforts among federal, state, and local law enforcement when children went missing.
