This dataset shows payments of Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards from the National Service Trust by institution and state since 1994. Individuals who successfully complete one or more terms of AmeriCorps service earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used to repay qualified student loans, pay education expenses at a qualified institution of higher education, or repay eligible interest expenses.
This dataset also shows a count, by state and year, of distinct individuals benefiting from the payments above. Because the counts and totals are of distinct individuals, the totals for a state will not be a simple of addition of each yearly amount since an individual may have received a benefit in more than one year.
An institution is qualified if it has been authorized by the Department of Education to receive other federal student aid, such as Pell grants, Perkins loans and Stafford loans. Beginning with terms of service that started on or after October 1, 2009, the education award may be used to pay expenses incurred in enrolling in an educational institution or training establishment that is approved under the GI Bill.
AmeriCorps members generally have seven years from the completion of their service to use their award. From March 1994 through March 2011, AmeriCorps members have earned more than $2.0 billion in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards and used $1.41 billion to fund their education and repay student loans. DATA NOTES: Organizations receiving Segal AmeriCorps Education Award payments include qualified colleges, universities, trade and technical schools, and financial institutions that issue student loans. In this raw dataset, the same institution may be listed multiple times with different names, abbreviations, or spellings. Future updates will consolidate these multiple listings. Also, this report shows raw data that does not reflect cancellations and refunds. Future versions of this report will address these issues.
