JOB SUMMARY:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is dedicated to achieving the highest standards of excellence in motor vehicle and highway safety. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Chief Counsel (ACC) for Legislation and General Law, you will serve as the Legal Assistant in the Legislation and General Law Division and as the ACC's secretarial and administrative assistant.  The position will require you to actively participate in the management of the office by applying excellent working knowledge of the programs and matters under the ACC's control as well as the responsibilities, procedures and duties of the Office of Chief Counsel.

The Legal Assistant:

  • Maintains control over numerous steps involved in the preparation, review, and approval of Federal Register notices concerning NHTSA highway safety grant programs. Assist attorneys by researching basic materials for use in preparing rulemaking documents.
  • Maintains the tracking system for actions related to the Division’s rulemaking activities, legal opinions, and interpretations. Serves as the key source of information concerning the state of actions and the availability of official documents to authorized individuals.
  • Personally handles to completion a wide variety of administrative tasks, making necessary contacts and performing necessary coordination. Prepares and submits requests for personnel action of all types and training requests and follows up on pending requests.
  • Schedules appointments and ensures that the ACC is informed of matters to be considered before the scheduled meetings. Makes necessary arrangements for conferences and assembles background materials for the ACC. Makes all necessary travel arrangements for the ACC and other division attorneys.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.

LEVEL To qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the following:
GRADE 09
  • Experience managing day-to-day administrative activities of a legal office. This includes handling a large volume and wide range of contacts in person and on the telephone, managing an executive's automated calendar, assisting staff attorneys in their day-to-day project needs, preparing and editing memoranda and documents, maintaining data and office files, locating, assembling and composing information for reports, preparing travel orders, and making meeting and travel arrangements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade requirements contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
