Benefits and Pay

The Defense Nuclear Safety Board Provides a myriad of benefits in addition to a competitive compensation rate. Read below to learn all about what we offer.

Financial Benefits

Competitive Salary

The Board offers pay rates that are competitive with the private sector, which includes annual pay increases, longevity raises, and the possibility of cash awards and bonuses. Salary for new employees depends on the grade and geographic area of the position you are selected for, as well as any prior Federal or private sector experience you may have. Incentive Awards Program

DNFSB has an active incentive awards program that rewards and recognizes outstanding achievement, innovation, and performance. Awards are both monetary and non-monetary.

Retirement

As a DNFSB employee, you will be enrolled in the Federal Employees Retirement Systems (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan. The three components are: 1) Social Security benefits, 2) the basic FERS retirement annuity, and 3) the TSP.

Social Security

If you've earned at least 40 Social Security credits, you will be entitled to Social Security Benefits (normally at age 62).

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)

As a DNFSB employee you will be eligible to contribute to the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). The TSP is similar to a 401(k) plan. The Government will automatically contribute the equivalent of 1% of your salary whether or not you make any contributions. If you choose to contribute, the Government will contribute matching contributions up to 4% of your salary. Employees may contribute up to the IRS annual elective deferral limit which is $17, 000 for 2012.

Relocation Assistance

For most jobs, DNFSB offers relocation assistance. Benefits include movement of your household goods and travel reimbursement.

Public Transportation Benefit Program

Eligible employees can participate in a transit subsidy program that helps reduce the expenses of commuting to and from work.

Insurance

Health Insurance

You have a choice from a variety of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) or fee-for-service health plans. The government pays approximately 75% of your biweekly health benefit premium. There is an annual open season for switching plans. Pre-existing conditions are covered. Coverage may be carried into retirement.

FEGLI Life Insurance

DNFSB employees may enroll in the government-wide Federal Employees Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program. FEGLI provides a variety of coverage and benefit amounts. DNFSB pays 1/3 of the cost of your basic insurance.

Long Term Care Insurance

DNFSB employees may apply for long term care insurance under a Government-sponsored program. The insurance covers long term care that arises from age, chronic illness, injury, or disability. Employees may apply for this insurance at any time. Special procedures allow new employees to obtain coverage by answering a minimum of health-related questions.

Medicare

As a Federal employee, you will be eligible for Medicare at age 65.

Health Benefits

Flexible Spending Account

Each year, you may elect to enroll in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). An FSA allows you to pay for eligible out-of-pocket health and dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis.

Access to Health Unit

A nearby off-site health clinic provides preventive care, limited immunizations, and health screening at no charge.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides professional counseling services for DNFSB employees who are experiencing personal problems that may be affecting their ability to perform on the job. The program offers assessment, referral, short-term counseling, and follow-up for employees dealing with family and marital problems, substance abuse, stress, depression, and many other personal challenges.

All employees of DNFSB may use the program at any time. Employees are encouraged to contact an EAP professional whenever they are experiencing personal problems. In many situations, family members of DNFSB employees are also eligible for the services of the program. Supervisors and managers may also seek the guidance of the EAP to help determine the appropriateness of referring employees who may be experiencing work performance and conduct changes due to personal problems.

Fitness Facility

The building landlord provides an on-site fitness facility for use by DNFSB employees.
