About Us
Waste Stream Approval

After funding approval is in place, the next step is to obtain approval for individual waste streams. The customer provides information concerning each waste stream on a Waste Profile Sheet. The waste stream information is reviewed against the Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria and the applicable Waste Specification Record (WSRd). If the waste stream information is sufficient and meets the applicable acceptance criteria, the waste stream is approved.

New customers also need to submit a copy of their Waste Certification Plan (or equivalent document) with the first WPS. In some cases, a site visit will be required for approval of this initial waste stream.

As you complete the Waste Profile Sheet, keep the following points in mind:

  • Read the instructions carefully to avoid questions from your Waste Management Representative.
  • Be sure to include all requested process knowledge and analytical data. At a minimum, the customer is required to submit data or describe the methodology employed to obtain the data used to make radiological and chemical classification determinations.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the waste stream comply with the Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria document and the applicable WSRd (if known), or identify all required exceptions to your Waste Management Representative when sumbitting the Waste Profile Sheet.

On completion, the customer submits the Waste Profile Sheet to their Waste Management Representative. The Waste Management Representative will coordinate all required reviews and return the approved Waste Profile Sheet to the customer. During the Waste Profile Sheet review and approval step, your Waste Management Representative will:

  • Ensure the waste stream fits into an established WSRd or develop a "Specific WSRd", in accordance with the WSRd assignment matrix.
  • Process any Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria document waivers required for approval of the waste stream. If a waiver requires DOE-RL approval, the Waste Profile Sheet review/approval time most likely will be delayed.
  • Ensure the waste stream complies with all applicable sections of the Hanford Site Solid Waste Acceptance Criteria document.
  • Determine the initial verification frequency for the waste stream.

After all required reviews are completed, your Waste Management Representative will return the approved Waste Profile Sheet package to you. This will include the following:

  • Approved Waste Profile Sheet,
  • Applicable WSRd(s),
  • Any applicable waivers, and approvals of high integrity containers, void space filler, or absorbent materials, etc.

Customers must revise their Waste Profile Sheet whenever the waste stream or generating process changes. In addition, Waste Profile Sheets must be recertified annually. Approximately 10 to 11 months after the initial approval of the Waste Profile Sheet, your Waste Management Representative will send you a Waste Profile Sheet Recertification Form asking you to identify any changes in the waste stream. A signed copy of the Waste Profile Sheet Recertification Form must be received within 12 months to maintain approval of the waste stream.
