GHI Country Strategy
In direct response to the central problems facing the health sector in Mozambique – lack of access to basic services, difficulty in getting resources to where they are needed, and challenges in deploying and keeping trained health workers at all levels – the vision of the country’s Global Health Initiative (GHI) Strategy is to further collaborate with the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and other local partners to reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality in rural populations.

Reduction of maternal, newborn, and child mortality is a top priority of the Government of Mozambique, and the extraordinary reach of U.S. Government-supported programs across Mozambique – as well as close engagement with the Ministry of Health, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector – provides a unique and promising opportunity to effectively reduce mortality in a manner that is fully country owned and sustainable.

Under GHI, the United States will work to reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality in rural populations through the following focus areas:

  1. Strengthening governance in the health sector
  2. Improving retention and management of the health workforce
  3. Expanding access and uptake of quality maternal, newborn, and child health services

Utilization of quality health care services will be improved by increasing access to high-impact, evidence-based integrated maternal, newborn, and child health services; improving specific health-seeking behaviors; and improving specific components of the health system that will have the greatest impact on reducing mortality.

GHI Principles in Action – Increase Impact through Strategic Coordination and Integration
U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funds in Mozambique are supplemented with non-HIV funds for maternal and child health, malaria, tuberculosis, water, sanitation, and hygiene through a new integrated health social marketing program to increase uptake and access of services through one-stop service points.
