WASHINGTON – The Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau today released retail sales data for February 2011. Retail sales jumped 1.0 percent, a strong monthly gain and the eighth consecutive monthly increase. This figure was slightly below private-sector expectations of a 1.2-percent gain. Sales at motor vehicle dealers increased 2.3 percent. Sales excluding automotive dealers increased 0.7 percent, consistent with private-sector expectations of a 0.7 percent gain.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke issued the following statement today on the release of the January 2011 U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services report by the Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Today’s report showed that U.S. exports of goods and services in January 2011 increased 2.7 percent from December 2010 to $167.7 billion, the highest level for monthly exports on record with record exports in both exports of goods ($120.5 billion), and exports of services ($47.2 billion). U.S. imports of goods and services increased 5.2 percent over this period to $214.1 billion, causing the U.S. trade deficit to increase 15.1 percent since December 2010 to reach $46.3 billion in January 2011.

Washington, December 17 — U.S. Commerce Department Acting Deputy Secretary Rebecca M. Blank welcomed members of the newly-formed Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee (FESAC) Friday during the group's first meeting as a function of the Commerce Department. The committee will advise agency heads of the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) - both within the Department of Commerce - as well as the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on statistical methodology and other technical matters related to the collection, tabulation, and analysis of federal economic statistics.
