New orders for manufactured durable goods in August decreased 0.1 percent, to $201.8 billion. Excluding transportation new orders also declined 0.1 percent. Overall shipments fell 0.2 percent, while capital goods shipments increased 2.7 percent. Unfilled orders and inventories both rose 0.9 percent.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in July 2011 increased 4.0% to $201.5 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders grew 0.7%. Overall shipment rose 2.5%. Capital goods shipment increased 0.6%. Unfilled orders rose 0.7% and inventories grew 0.8% in July 2011.

Economic Indicator Preview: The Durable Recovery in Durable Goods

On Wednesday, July 27th, the U.S. Census Bureau will issue the advance report on durable goods for June.  This release is important because it impacts Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in two significant ways: exports of goods and business investment in equipment and software.  (The first look at GDP for the second quarter will be released on July 29th by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.)

New orders for manufactured durable goods in May 2011 increased 1.9%, to $195.6 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders grew 0.6%. Overall shipments rose 0.3%. Capital goods shipments grew 0.8%. Unfilled orders increased 0.9%. And inventories rose 1.2% in May 2011.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in April 2011 decreased 3.6% to $189.9 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders fell 1.5%. Overall shipments declined 1.0% to $194.9 billion. Capital goods shipments fell 1.9%. Unfilled orders rose 0.2%. And inventories increased 0.9% in April 2011.
