Nicole Y. Lamb-Hale was nominated by President Barack Obama in November, 2009 and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in February, 2010 to serve as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Manufacturing and Services in the International Trade Administration. In this role, she helps U.S. industries succeed internationally by strengthening their competitive position in foreign markets to sustain and create American jobs.
Under Nicole’s leadership, Manufacturing and Services advances the international competitiveness of U.S. industries by leveraging its in-depth sector and analytical expertise in the development and execution of trade policy and promotion strategies.
Prior to her role as Assistant Secretary, Nicole was appointed by President Obama in June, 2009 to serve as Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce. In that role, she assisted the General Counsel as the chief legal officer for the Department and legal advisor to the Secretary of Commerce. Before joining the Obama Administration, Nicole was the Managing Partner of the Detroit office of an international law firm where she specialized in business restructuring in the manufacturing sector.
Nicole has been active in civic and community affairs throughout her career. Her involvement over the years has included serving as vice-chair of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority, by appointment of Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm; serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of Leadership Detroit; and serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. She is also a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; a member of The Links Incorporated; and a member of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.
Nicole has been a frequent lecturer on business restructuring matters with a particular emphasis in recent years on the automotive industry. She has received many honors for her accomplishments and leadership over the years including being named a Super Lawyer for three successive years and one of Detroit's Most Influential Women by a leading business publication. She received her B.A. with high honors from the University of Michigan in 1988 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1991.
