Washington, Sep 12, 2012 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement condemning yesterday’s attacks against Americans in Libya, which took the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, and two other Americans:

“I stand with President Obama, our entire nation, and the international community to condemn the violence yesterday in Libya. These brave Americans – including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, a constituent – were serving on the front lines to help build a free and stable future for the Libyan people.  This heinous attack is an affront to their commitment to peace and security, and my thoughts and prayers are with their families during this difficult time.

“As the son of a foreign service officer, I know firsthand the extraordinary work these unsung heroes do every day. They put their lives on the line in service to our country and join thousands working abroad to show the world America’s dedication to democracy and freedom.  This senseless attack only reaffirms our core values, and we will work tirelessly to bring these extremists to justice.”
