OLSON STATEMENT ON REPORTS OF DISRUPTED IRANIAN PLOT TO KILL THE SAUDI AMBASSADOR TO THE US

Washington, DC– Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) today issued the following statement in response to reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have disrupted a plot by elements of Iran's government to kill the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. on American soil:

"News of this thwarted plot is a testament to the hard work of our intelligence agencies. However, this action, which was supported by factions of the Iranian government, not only has serious implications for the US-Iran relationship, but also further highlights the need for us to control our southern border.

"It is clear that the Iranians view the US southern border as deeply vulnerable and an easy opportunity to smuggle explosives into our country for terrorist activities. The fact that they tried to enlist the help of a Mexican narco-terrorist organization reflects a perception that the cartels control the border. If we do not address this crisis, it will only be a matter of time before an attack on America is carried out by infiltrating the US-Mexico border.

"The White House must see this for what it is - a wake-up call to the precarious situation in which the Border States find themselves. State and local police are outnumbered, out-financed, and outgunned by the Mexican cartels. We must achieve operational control of the border now - we won't be lucky every time."
